Top 5 Productivity Tools For Chromebook

Last December of 2010, Google launched a pilot program along with notebook units which they called “Cr-48? – a prototype of the Chrome OS-based notebook.

That prototype is now called and released as Chromebook which according to Google is:

“A mobile device designed specifically for people who live on the web. With a comfortable full-sized keyboard, large display and clickable trackpad, all-day battery life, light weight, and built-in ability to connect to Wi-Fi and mobile broadband networks, Chromebooks are ideal for anytime, anywhere access to the web. They provide a faster, safer, more secure online experience for people who live on the web, without all the time-consuming, often confusing, high level of maintenance required by typical computers.”

Chromebook has built-in Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity that keeps you connected wherever you are, anytime. It works as it’s intended, “to connect you to the internet and to your web-based applications on the fly”.

Many are saying that a Chromebook is great computer to start up with. Why? One of the many reasons, is the minimal maintenance requirements of its hardware. And since it is a web-based device, users can only have access to all their applications and files when they have an access to the internet (a downside?). The “3G models include a free 100 MB per month of mobile data from Verizon Wireless.”

No applications (except the Chrome OS that runs the device and other modules of its subsystem) are locally stored in the device. All your applications and data are stored on the web. This has been done, to provide us with more security and redundancy. If you lose your Chromebook (hopefully not), you can just log on into another Chromebook and continue to work (provided that you have a backup device).

Chromebook is the first ever Cloud-based notebook that can help anyone boost his productivity. Here are the

An interesting hardware/software combination and a point to the future. I think that in the near future most applications will run in clouds and PC’s will become simple workstations with nothing more then an OS and a browser. Cloud computing and using software from clouds is the direction where Google is trying to take us (software developers and users). As software developer I already started to learn about RIA technologies and cloud computing.
